Handling CoursesOCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY Venomous snake relocation courses Over the last 20 years we have had the opportunity to work with some of the World's most fascinating reptiles and have learned valuable information related to the habits, distribution, husbandry, long-term maintenance and natural history of these much misunderstood group of animals. We are dedicated to promoting understanding and the conservation of our native reptiles through communication, education and interaction.
Employees from "John Holland Group" learn safe relocation techniques with venomous snakes. Objectives 1. To provide training and awareness in snake behaviour and other Occupational Health and Safety aspects. 2. To increase employees knowledge so as to minimise the likelihood of snakebite. 3. To safely relocate venomous snakes away from potentially high risk areas. 4. To be trained in emergency first aid in the event of snakebite. Course overview This one day course, presented by West Aussie Reptiles, is designed to give participants an insight into reptile biology and an in-depth understanding of snake behavior. Focusing in particular on venomous West Australian species of snake, we will help participants to develop the skills and obtain the knowledge required to identify snakes in the field and identification exercises occur throughout the course. With live examples of many species, we aim to train you to safely work with both captive and wild, venomous snakes from all over the state. Using both published information and the trainer’s own experiences, various aspects of snake biology and behavior are discussed and also demonstrated with live snakes in the classroom. Snake venoms, its purpose and its effects are also discussed at length, covering the symptoms of snakebite, clinical effects of venom from various snake species, why snakes may bite, first aid, and possible reactions to certain venoms. Handling venomous snakes requires special skills, knowledge and equipment. Participants will learn about the proper use of snake handling equipment, basic techniques and the psychological preparation to safely deal with venomous snake encounters. The ability to use the snake’s own natural behaviour to safely capture and relocate with minimal stress placed on the animal while minimizing human risks is our ultimate goal. Please note. This is not an advanced venomous handling course and is designed only to safely relocate venomous snakes away from potentially high risk areas.
